Grandfather Mountain North Carolina
Published Sunday, August 21st 2016 - Updated Sunday, August 28th 2016While we were trying to get to the state park, Google took us to Grandfather Mountain, but it was a privately-owned attraction. It was $40 to get in ($20 per person); good thing we packed a lunch. They did give us a CD to listen to while driving through the park. It had animal habitats too, but we did not stop a see the animals. We went to the trail that took us to the mile high swing bride.
The day was a warm summer day, but as we went up the mountain it did get cooler, almost 20 degrees. It was also a bit foggy out in the distance, so a lot the pictures came out grey. The trail was fun, but short. Grandfather Mountain is known as the “most rugged in eastern America”. The terrain was rocky, gravel, and muddy. There were bugs flapping around, but none really bothered us.
What we found refreshing and very different than Florida parks was the smell of Christmas Pine trees; Florida usually smells like salt water. This Christmas tree smells were only in certain spots; there were areas that it just smelled like morning dew, still refreshing and very cool. By this time our legs are feeling nice and tight, mainly because it was leg day on Saturday.
Got to the bridge and in the distance we couldhear the squeaking of the bridge made by people walking across it. Once we got there, there was a line, but we were able to get some pictures. You can see mountains in the distance, but due to the fog, they did not come out great. After crossing the bridge, we could walk across the rocky ledge, which was nice to get out as far as we could.
Now we are starting to get hungry, so we decided to head back and find a picnic are to eat. This park had some great spots to barbeque and picnic. No barbeque for us this time, Maggie made some pasta the night before, so that was lunch and boy did it hit the spot. The squirrel in the tree came down to check out what we were eating. This squirrel was much skinner than the Florida squirrels, but I digress, we had a great time at this park. We still will try to make it out to Grandfather Mountain State Park.
